- What is a smart reader?
- Smart readers have embedded processors that can be programmed
to collect valid tag data. Used effectively, smart readers
can eliminate the need for middleware and other devices used
to control detectors, sensors and Programmable Logic Devices
for diverter stations. Smart readers can directly control
external sensors and detectors.
- How do I install the software?
- The Senetric Configurator comes with an installer, which
installs the user interface, server and database. The user
interface can be installed on a different PC than the server
and database. Once installed, the user interface, server
and database are operational.
- What readers deos the Senetric
Configurator work with?
- The current version supports the Intermec© IF5. Support
of additional smart readers is forthcoming.
- What is collected in the database?
- The tag id, a timestamp, reader name, and antenna are collected
and stored in the database.
- How can I access the data?
- The data is stored in an SQL-compliant database called
rftag. Standard SQL statement can be issued against the tables
to retrieve the data. It can also be accessd via the data
viewer tool.
- Can I generate reports?
- Yes, using the data viewer, reports can be generated and
transferred to another computer.
- How many readers can the server
and database support?
- The current version supports up to 5 readers. The next
release will support additional readers.
- Can I save the configuration
settings?
- Yes, the configuration settings can be saved in a .cfg
file.
- Can I use the same application
on different readers?
- Yes, by saving configuration settings to a file, the application
can be loaded on another reader. Note that the RFID readers
have different IP addresses; the IP address in the configuration
settings must be changed. This is a very simple process.
- How does the reader licensing
work?
- Each runtime application is licensed to a reader. A license
key is required for an application to run on a smart reader.
The license keys are entered on the user interface.
- Does the Senetric Configurator
work with RFID printers?
- The current version works independently of a printer/label
applicator. A printer/applicator and tag-commissioning interface
is forthcoming.
- What exactly is a configurable
runtime application?
- The runtime application is an embedded java application
targeted for devices with an embedded processor, such as
mobile devices, Internet devices and industrial controllers
and smart RFID readers. The application is loaded and stored
in the smart reader memory. The application self configures
and begins execution every time the RFID reader is turned
on. The application configuration is based on the configuration
settings.
- What do I need to install
the Senetric Configurator on my line?
- The reader must be connected to a network via Ethernet
cable. The reader should be located near the conveyor line.
This is constrained by the length of the antenna cable. The
antenna is affixed on the conveyor line in such a manner
to read the RFID tag. Your system integrator must determine
tag placement, antenna distance and antenna power. If a presence
detector is used, it must be positioned before the antenna
and connected to the reader via a GPIO breakout box (ordered
separately). The breakout box is also used to connect the
output signals to a light stack or PLD. The Senetric Configurator
is installed on a networked PC or server. The User Interface
can be installed on a separate computer with network access.
- Is the server and database
configurable?
- No, currently the server and database are not configurable.
The server uses IBM© technology to ensure stable and
robust communication with the reader.
- Where can I install the software?
- The Senetric Configurator must be installed on a networked
computer or server with access to the RFID reader.
- What is WRDI and why is it
important?
- WRDI stands for Websphere RFID Device Infrastructure and
is installed on several smart readers and controllers, including
the Intermec IF5. WRDI is an IBM© product. WRDI enables
applications to be remotely managed and installed. It offers
the capability for readers to interface with smaller, limited
or heterogeneous enterprise data management systems or larger
homogeneous enterprise resource management systems. The architecture
enables the development of scalable applications that can
be easily deployed, as data collection needs change. The
Senetric Configurator leverages components of WRDI-based
technology.
- Does the system interface
with other ERP systems?
- The Senetric Configurator does not directly interface with
other systems. Reports can be generated and exported.
- What RFID and system hardware
do I need?
- Currently an Intermec IF5 RFID reader, antenna, a networked
PC or server is needed. Pending data collection requirements,
presence detector, a PLD diverter station, and light stack
for user notifications, and a GPIO interface. Don’t
forget infrastructure requirements such as network cabling,
electrical wiring and reader and or antenna enclosures. A
RFID printer/label applicator is also needed.
- Do you have training and
support?
- Yes, Senetric provides maintenance and technical support.
Online tutorials and training materials are available to
all customers.
- What limitations does the
demo unit have?
- The demo version operates for 10 minutes then requires
restarting the reader. The demo version does not come with
a database. The data is stored in a file. The user interface
and server are installed on the same PC.
